As a hiring manager, you sometimes find yourself in a lucky position where there’s an overwhelming number of qualified candidates that apply for your open roles.  When it is hard to differentiate between candidates, you should look beyond the resume and work experience to find the best fit for the job.

If you are having a difficult time deciding between candidates, here are a few tools your can utilize to make your final decision:

Cultural Assessments

Cultural assessments reveal several factors, including interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and other interests.  Off-the-shelf tests should be calibrated across your existing team so know your prevailing culture.  There are times where your current team may index towards one style – i.e. detail orientation and you may just need someone with more creativity to boost that muscle.

Often times candidates with the same career journey may have different intangibles — so make sure you find a way to uncover these characteristics.

Skills Assessment

Skills assessments are becoming the norm in most hiring processes and a great way to objectively rank the strength of your candidate pool.  Once you create the assessment, make sure that the test is standardized — including time allotted, assessment medium and the same questions.

This standardization process will allow you to objectively identify the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate so that you are not blinded by other factors.

Long-Term View: The Growth Mindset

After your get the results of the skills & cultural assessments and are still having a hard time determining which candidate is the best for the job, take the long-term view and select someone with a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset

To briefly sum up the differences: Individuals who believe their talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others have a growth mindset.  They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset who believe their talents are innate gifts.

Although you clearly have short-term needs that have to be addressed immediately, it is also critical that you pick a candidate who will take on more responsibility as the years go by.

In a hot job market, it can be paramount to make hiring decisions quickly.  By having candidates assessed across these factors, you’ll be able to make decisions much more quickly.
